Beyond Software: Why AI-Powered Services Matter

For years, software founders were taught that pure SaaS was the ideal model and that managed services were something to avoid. Services were seen as harder to scale, lower margin, and less attractive to buyers. AI is beginning to change that logic.

The problem for many SaaS businesses today is not just competition from other vendors. It is the combination of continuity risk and build versus buy. Customers are already reluctant to rip out existing systems, even when those systems are outdated. Now, with AI, they can also build internal tools that may be “good enough” to solve the problem themselves. That makes it even harder for one SaaS company to displace another.

So the question becomes: how do you create value beyond software?

One answer is to combine software with a managed services layer that is delivered through AI. Instead of just selling a tool, you sell the outcome. The customer does not need to change behaviour, retrain teams, or take on the risk of implementation. The software becomes the engine, but the service is what the customer actually experiences.

Historically, services revenue was penalized because it depended on human labour. But AI agents change the economics. When the service layer is automated, scalable, and embedded in the product, it can become a real differentiator.

That is why strategic buyers are starting to look differently at these models. In a market where software alone is easier to replicate, AI-powered service delivery may be the new moat. The next great software companies may not look like software companies at all.
